Diablo Immortal is currently still in technical alpha, but Blizzard recently explained in a blog post which business model the title will use. The studio uses a free-to-play model with optional in-app purchases. The gameplay should still come first.
Blizzard Entertainment shared the start of the alpha on its official website. The public alpha goes live today (December 18), but is currently only available to a select number of Australian players on Android who pre-registered for Diablo Immortal through the Google Play Store.
“The invites will go out to those players who pre-registered earliest, if their device meets the minimum system requirements,” Blizzard noted. “We’ll also be inviting some select community members to join us so we can get their invaluable feedback.”
“This is an early look at Diablo Immortal—an exciting new chapter in our action role-playing game series, telling an original story that takes place between the events of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and Diablo III,” the overview of the technical alpha said. “It will feature intense, visceral combat; highly replayable dungeons; deep progression and itemization; and a host of never-before-seen monsters. Diablo Immortal also reimagines the dark, gothic realm of Sanctuary as a sprawling massively multiplayer world filled with deadly things hellbent on killing you.”
What’s in Diablo Immortal’s Alpha?
The Alpha of Diablo Immortal is basically a slightly shortened version of the full version. For example, players only have access to six of the game’s eight areas and are only allowed to use four of the six classes – barbarian, wizard, monk and demon hunter (necromancer and crusader are still missing). The level cap is set at 45 in the alpha, but should be 60 in the final game. Since the different story sections can only be activated with a certain character level, the final chapters are also not available.
As we previously reported, Diablo Immortal will be free-to-play and will include microtransactions. However, these are deactivated in the Alpha. The same goes for the Battle Pass.
Mobile app with in-game purchases
Diablo Immortal is planned as a free-to-play title with optional in-app purchases. However, according to Blizzard, purchases shouldn’t affect basic gameplay. The in-game purchases should feel like a bonus in-game and not restrict anyone’s gaming experience.
